Thinking

thinking about thinking

What's going on in there?

“Most people think they are thinking when they are just

rearranging their prejudices”

Thinking is something that is rarely taught.

It is something we are expected to be able to do as a by-product of learning.

Thinking has both perceptual and emotional components.

How we perceive a situation,  problem or challenge varies according to expectation and situation.

Our emotional response to a situation, problem or challenge not only influences our perception BUT dictates HOW we think about  it.

The cultural ‘norm’ is, perhaps, to defend our position, our thoughts, our ideas. Hence we default to what Edward de Bono has called ‘adversarial thinking’

In order to think more effectively and creatively we need to be able to:

Perceive a situation, problem, challenge emotionally, critically, neutrally and from different perspectives.

Engage in solutions oriented, lateral and divergent thinking processes.

Communicate our ideas clearly, concisely and openly.

Engage in parallel and collaborative thinking as well as debate with others to explore our thinking.

Create and Innovate within a values and utilities framework.

…. more of these thoughts to follow…

“I THINK THEREFORE  I CREATE”

Edward de Bono
